CHAPTER TWELVE

Allegiances made

While everyone worked to get the gear together to head out, Benj paced the confines of Michael’s room. Christian had gone with Doyle to pack his belongings, and he was glad he had a moment to talk alone with Michael without the chance of Christian overhearing. There was so much he needed to say and yet he didn’t know where to start.

Michael took the lead and said, “You know, if you ever hurt him, family or not, I will hunt your arse down and pay you back tenfold.”

Benj knew he was being pissy when he retorted, “You mean like you did by walking away from him? At the first sign of things not going your way, you left him.”

“Did it ever occur to you that I love him enough not to make him choose?”

“What do you mean?” Somehow Benj didn’t think he was seeing the whole picture.

“Think about it. Having to choose between us would have torn him up. So yes, I loved him enough to walk away. I loved him enough to give him the opportunity to find out who he really is. Even if that means I had to step aside for you.” The conviction in Michael’s eyes was the best indicator that he was telling the truth. “I meant what I said. If I find out you have ever hurt him—I will come back and take him away from you.”

Benj had to respect Michael, but he couldn’t help arguing back, “You mean, you can try.”

“And I’ll win. Haven’t you heard?” Michael tapped his own chest. “Apparently, I’m the king.”

Even though the conversation ended with a smile, Benj had the impression Michael would do exactly what he threatened.

“You and me,” he gestured between them both. “One day we’re going to be the best of friends. I think you will find we’ve a lot more in common than anyone thinks.”

“If you say so,” Michael said as he hoisted the bag onto his shoulder. Passing the other bed on his way to the door, Michael picked up Doyle’s luggage. “Come on, we’ve a meeting to attend.”

They gathered in the street where the cars were parked. The time had come to split up. The six going to meet with the resident coven head in Ashford climbed into one of the rented SUVs. To this day it still amazed Benj that Asher lived in a part of London which had been named after him so many decades before. It would be like Benj renaming Lindisfarne in his name. How egotistical did one have to be to need to be the centre of his own universe? And then instead of living in a house like normal people, he had the coven set up in Spelthorne Lane, smack bang in the middle of the industrial estate. Either the guy was completely off his rocker, or he had a plan. Benj was going with the latter as Asher was very high up in the fight against the Eldren.

The wolves seemed on edge at being separated.
